About Quilted Garden Designs
Owner / Designer
I grew up amidst the corn fields of Iowa, riding horses, ice skating, riding bikes (of course barefoot), climbing through barns and sewing*sewing*sewing. My mom taught me to sew, and being an artist herself, instilled in me the drive to be successful. She never questioned my messes or disasters knowing that each was a step in fertilizing an artists' mind. When I was sixteen she treated me to a big box of fabric purchased at an auction - oh heaven on earth. Knowing what I know today... that box was filled with yardage from the late 1800's to early 1900's. I spent countless hours measuring, cataloging and planning projects. I am glad to say that I proceeded to use all of it in clothing and crafts. I am now honored to own the treadle sewing machine both my mom and grandmother sewed on and the Viking machine my mom purchased from a door to door salesman in the 1940's! What treasures I have!
My art career began at the University of Iowa, but like many, I fell in love, moved and got married. I completed my education at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville with a degree in nursing. After fifteen great years in the home health care arena, I retired and returned to my comfortable world of fabric, design, sewing and quilting. Being back in my creative space full time felt like I put on an old pair of cozy slippers... life was good!
I opened my shop 'The Quilted Garden' in 2000. After thirteen successful years it was just time to close and give full attention to my design company 'Quilted Garden Designs'. Those years on N. Main St. were the best. I loved teaching, creating, visiting, and listening, not to mention the customers from all over the world that stopped in. I miss the stories, the spontaneous 'show and tells' and all the friends made over the years. Thankfully we have social media to keep us connected.
As I design and create all that 'stuff' that is bubbling around in my head, I will share with YOU and YOU will get first dibs on purchasing my patterns and kits via this website. If you are a Facebook, Twitter or Instagram fan, follow Quilted Garden (you may win a prize), since I tend to post there frequently.
I married my husband Jim in 1982. He stole my heart and moved me to southern Illinois many years ago and has been an amazing partner. I could not have become who I am without his love and encouragement! We have 3 daughters, two son-in-laws and the most beautiful grand-daughters... life is good!
